On 12 August, the US Department of State (DOS) released its 2024 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices.

There are some key changes to be aware of, based on our rapid review:

  • Reports are shorter at half or even a third of the length of previous reports.
  • They no longer include the discrimination and societal abuses section. This section previously included discrimination and violence against women, racial and ethnic minorities, LGBTQIA+ persons, persons with disabilities, and persons living with HIV or AIDS. (This potentially reflects the US administration’s rollback of DEI initiatives).
  • The reports now include less statistical data. The US DOS notes that the underlying data are generally available online.
